Susan paints subjects that move her. It might be light on a window sill or the sun picking Cape Blomidon out of the fog. Small domestic details or grand landscapes can both bring her joy and engage her artistic ambitions. It is through her art she can share how she feels.
Susan is a multi disciplinary artist in the Annapolis Valley. She grew up in St. John’s NL and has been strongly influenced by her mother, the artist Kathleen Knowling. She studied Architecture in Nova Scotia (BArch, T.U.N.S.) and Design in the UK (MA, De Montfort University, Leicester).
She works primarily in watercolour or oil but is also familiar with mixed media, print making, and 3-D design.
Her art practice began while farming and raising a family in Manitoba. While working on their farm, she watched the land and the sky throughout the year. This gave her a strong connection with the surrounding landscape and that is where she finds meaning. Plein air painting and sketching help her capture her observations and then develop them further.
